Understanding the tower and crypt of Bourges Cathedral
• A fragile tower. The
north tower collapsed in 1506 due to the damage done by the settling of
the foundations to the vaulting around its base. Repair work took
thirty years. The new tower, known as the ‘Butter’ Tower, is so named
due to the way it was financed: those who contributed money were
dispensed from fasting.
